A Beginner's Guide to Offering Commissions Online
*Edit 06/29/2017* Hi guys! It's been over 3 years since I originally wrote this guide. I was just rereading today, and while I still agree with many of the core principals, there are some edits and updates I would like to make. I am going to try and make an updated version sometime soon!
I decided to write this journal because in the last month alone, I had about five young artists ask me this question in one form or another: "How should I go about offering commissions?"
This seemingly easy question can actually be quite difficult to answer. The first time I was asked this question, I expected to write only a paragraph response. I was

Food for Thought for Artists Offering Commissions
I will type out longer thoughts on this matter later, but I have been learning quite a lot in my current professional practices art class.
This class has truly helped to redefine how I approach commissioned artwork.
To anyone who is considering art/illustration/graphic design as a career, I highly recommend investing in this book: Graphic Artist's Guild: Handbook to Pricing and Ethical Guidelines.
This book outlines industry standards for artwork and how all artists should approach commission and design projects.
It outlines transfer of rights and the cost of buying certain rights.

Speaking of... I really, really REALLY need to scan in some recent work. I've got literally hundreds of drawings
It seems that the financial crunch has finally caught up to me. I can no longer afford to take on any more debt. Whatever I pay now needs to be out-of-pocket; impossible, as such money does not exist... yet.
In the next year my goal is earn enough money through various commissions to return to school. I'm going to miss the department, but I guess it's time to start flying, ready or not.

No, there's more good stuff to write bout. First semester of my second year is over and boy have I learned a lot! (technology-wise) I'm really getting into CG right now - modeling especially, though animation as always continues to captivate me. :)
Goals for the new year:
-Assemble a general portfolio, as well as portfolios tailored for every company I would like to intern at
-Become more confident: develop and strengthen my own voice, whatever it is.
-Get better at animating (volumes! X( ), figure out how to use Flash.
-Make friends. Seriously. :( The mental/social/emotional isolation at school drives me nuts sometim
